Austin City Limits: 1986-1990
Austin City Limits: 1986-1990
Just in time for the release of the Rhino Records Austin City Limits Music Festival DVD Set, let's take a look at the performances from ACL in the late 1980s. Besides the 'typical' ACL acts you might expect to see, the addition of musicians such as Leo Kottke, k.d. lang and Loudon Wainwright III expanded the horizons of the growing audience.
The first all-female Songwriters Special was a highlight of the 1986 season. Emmylou Harris, Roseanne Cash and Gail Davies recorded a session that became one of the most popular ever aired.
Fats Domino (recently in the news after his rescue in hurricane-ravaged New Orleans) appeared on the program for the first time in 1987. Also making first-time appearances that same year were Lyle Lovett, Randy Travis, Kathy Mattea and Johnny Cash with the Carter Family.
Season 13, starting in 1988, featured a mix of musicians old and new. Reba McEntire made her ACL debut, and k.d. lang appeared to promote her album Angel With A Lariat. Coming back to the enthusiastic audiences were George Strait, Dwight Yoakam and Nanci Griffith.
Further stretching the boundaries of traditional bluegrass, country and western performers, in 1989 Leonard Cohen taped his first appearance. The one-hour program becomes the most frequently requested Austin City Limits ever.
As the 90s came around, the series premieres of future superstars Mary Chapin Carpenter and Garth Brooks aired. Also in 1990, Michelle Shocked, Lucinda Williams and James McMurtry brought their unique styles to the program. Sadly, 1990 also marked the final appearance of Stevie Ray Vaughan to the ACL stage.
