Rating Stuff is Overrated

Why is it that we music geeks get so much satisfaction from making lists? There are even entire movies about making lists. Robert indulged our collective compulsion with his latest article, this one about what we each consider to be 'most overrated songs.' So here goes. You can read the whole article at BlogCritics or FIQL.

It likely won't make me any friends, but I've picked "Born to Run" by Bruce Springsteen. It may be a result of preconceived music tastes, but The Boss's everyman rock just doesn't resonate with me at all. "Born to Run" sounds like Bruce has just run a marathon and now he's trying to sing, with its breathless lyrics and insistent chiming. What place do those chimes have in a rock song? Sir, step away from the xylophone. "Strap your hands 'cross my engines"? Please. There's nothing here for me to hold onto. Keep on running, Bruce, I'll take a pass on this one.

I guess you better stay on the other side of the river. No Jersey Shore for you.

"Born To Run" is not only one of the greatest rock songs, the entire album is solid gold. If you wanted to pick an overrated Bruce song, you could have at least picked "Born in the USA". Even the most hardcore Bruce fan will say BTR beats BITUSA by miles.....

Listen to the entire album, and choose again.

Wow, that was fun. While I did get called a "Pavement-loving schmuck", I think you may be the only contributor who had the angry responses spill over into your own site.

    Bravo, Amanda!

I know what I am bringing you when we have our first big playlist blog convention.

    Cheetos, of course.

For the most part "Born To Run" is a guy song, but it gave this guy chills the first 50 or 60 times he heard it. I seldom agree with his politics and I don't care for his solo acoustic stuff, but with the E-Street band, Bruce can't be touched. He's the best performer alive today.

Pretty funny that someone named for one of the worst rock songs ever recorded, "Amanda," would comment on one of the greatest rock songs ever recorded.

It's all a matter of taste of course. But Born to Run is one of my favorite all time rock songs. It made my 'wake me from a coma' list.

Kind of funny though that it almost got voted to become the NJ State Song.

Agree on "Born in the USA" - never could listen to that more than once or twice.

Believe it or not, I actually got some insightful messages from people about what Bruce means to them. I'll be planning some quality time with The Boss's first three albums sometime in the near future.

Thanks to everyone (yes, even the person who thought it appropriate to use my name as fodder for disparagement - huh?) who came by.
